TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ñ Any color-capable Macintosh

SETTING UP
These instructions assume a basic familiarity with Macintosh interface conventions. If you╒re just getting started with your computer, and find the operations described below confusing, please refer to the documentation that came with your computer.
To install Invisible Universe, follow these steps:
1. Drag the Invisible Universe ─ folder from the CD to your hard drive .
2. Open the System Extentions folder on the CD to show the extensions necessary or recommended for use with this title.
3. If you don╒t already have these extensions installed, or are unsure, drag the appropriate icons one-by-one to your System Folder icon and drop them there. The Macintosh will guide you through the rest of the installation. If you install any extensions, restart your computer to make them active. If you have an older version of QuickTime already installed, you will need to manually delete this extension before installing the new version.
GETTING STARTED
1. Make sure the Invisible Universe CD is in your CD-ROM drive.
2. Double-click the Invisible Universe icon on your hard drive.
ABOUT MEMORY
If you have a PowerMac with only 8 Mbytes of RAM installed, you╒ll need to make sure you have enough memory available. Invisible Universe performs best if you have more than 5,000K of RAM (memory) free before you launch it. Making this much available can be difficult with certain models and system software combinations. Here╒s how to tell whether you have enough RAM available:
1. Open the Memory control panel and make sure virtual memory is off. If you╒re using some other form of memory extension, such as Connectix╒s RAM Doubler¬, turn it off. If you make changes, restart your Mac before proceeding.
2. Quit all applications. (Print this document first if necessary.)
3. In the Finder, choose ╥About this Macintosh╙ from the Apple menu.
4. Note the ╥Largest Unused Block╙ figure. This is the amount of RAM you have available. If it is more than 5,000K, you╒re fine. If you have less than 5,000K of RAM free, however, you must take steps to trim the amount of memory your system software is using. This will make more available for Invisible Universe.
To trim your system software╒s memory needs, you must temporarily disable the extensions and control panels you don╒t need. If this isn╒t something you╒re comfortable with, refer to your Macintosh documentation, or seek the help of a knowledgeable friend.
If you have 16 or more Mbytes of RAM, you may want to increase the memory allocated to Invisible Universe:
1. Click once to highlight the Invisible Universe icon on your desktop.
2. Press -I to display the Information Box for Invisible Universe.
3. At the bottom right corner of the Information Box you will see two fields for allocating memory to Invisible Universe. One says "Minimum size" and one says "Preferred size." Change them both to the amout of memory you want to allocate to Invisible Universe.
4. Close the Information Box.
VIDEO QUALITY
Invisible Universe contains many video segments. These will look their best if your computer is set for thousands of colors. To switch to thousands of colors, follow these steps:
1. Open the Monitors Control Panel.
2. Make sure the Colors button is selected.
3. Select Thousands.
4. Close the Monitors Control Panel.
If possible, you should increase the memory allocation of Invisible Universe (see the ABOUT
MEMORY section above) when using thousands of colors. If you don't increase your memory
allocation, you may experience sluggish performance or erratic behavior in thousands of colors.
If you can't increase your memory allocation and encounter these problems, go back to using 256
colors. Note that many computers only have 256 colors available.
AUDIO QUALITY
Most audio in Invisible Universe is 16-bit. If your computer has 16-bit sound, you should select this option for best sound quality. To change to 16-bit sound, follow these steps:
1. Open the Sound Control Panel.
2. Select Sound Out from the menu on the control panel.
3. Select 16 bit Stereo. If available, choose a Rate of 22.050 kHz.
4. Close the Sound Control Panel.
POWER MACINTOSH 7100, 7100 A/V TROUBLESHOOTING
If you have a Power Macintosh 7100 or Power Macintosh 7100/AV you may experience QuickTime movie playback problems in the Guided Tours and Movies sections. Increasing the memory allocation of Invisible Universe may reduce the frequency of this problem, though it will not solve it entirely.
If problems persist in these sections, you may have outdated Apple CD-ROM software. To update your Apple CD-ROM software, follow these steps:
1. Open the System Extentions folder on the Invisible Universe CD.
2. Open the CD-ROM Software folder.
3. Double-click the Apple CD-ROM Read Me icon.
4. Follow the directions in the Apple CD-ROM Read Me document to install the latest CD-ROM system software.
The Apple CD-ROM Software installer will update the following files in your System Folder:
1. Apple CD-ROM
2. Apple Photo Access
3. AppleCD Audio Player
4. Audio CD Access
5. Foreign File Access
6. High Sierra File Access
7. ISO 9660 File Access
HELP
There is on-line help available in Invisible Universe. From all sections of the program, you can press -H and a Help screen will appear that explains how to use the various screen elements.
FIND
Invisible Universe has a Find feature that lets you easily access any glossary definition or program item. From all sections of the program, press -F and a Find screen will appear. You can toggle between the Definitions list and the Items list by clicking the appropriate button. Then, either type the term or part of the term you want to find in the text entry field and press Enter, or scroll through the list until you see the term you want to find. To go to your term, click on it and then click the Go To button.
GLOSSARY
Invisible Universe contains a glossary with definitions for many of the technical terms used throughout the program. From all sections of the program, press -G and the glossary will appear. Click on the first letter of your term at the top of the glossary to view the glossary items that start with that letter. Use the left and right arrows to move through the list.
Terms that appear in the glossary are underlined in the Celestial Objects text. Simply click on any underlined word to open the glossary and read the definition for that word.
UNIVERSE SHOW
You can view a self-running show that presents every Celestial Object. Select Universe Show from the menu bar to start it. Each image will appear in a random order for several seconds. Press Option to play the images in their proper order. To view the next image immediately, press Shift. Press Control to toggle the image name in the upper left corner.
QUIT
To quit Invisible Universe, press -Q or select Quit from the menu bar.
PERFORMANCE TIPS
We recommend that you quit out of all other programs before launching Invisible Universe.
If you have your Date & Time system extention activated, the date or time may occasionally appear in the Celestial Objects section. To hide the date or time, position the cursor over it, hold down the Option key, and click the mouse button. Repeat this process after you exit Invisible Universe to restore your date or time.
